According to Maureen Salamon, a contributor to LiveScience.com, taking a long, hot shower or bath—while it might feel good to your cold body—can actually be very drying for your skin. So rather than indulging in this type of shower during the winter months, try to take shorter showers with lukewarm water if you’re worried about drying out your skin. Not only will this help with things like preparing your skin for shaving, but it will also keep more moisture in your skin once you get out of the shower.

Additionally, once you get out of the shower, try to pat your skin dry rather than rubbing it with your towel to keep in even more moisture.

Make Moisturizing Your Priority

To further help your skin from getting too dry in the winter, Dr. Manny Alvarez, a contributor to Fox News, recommends that you use a moisturizer on your skin on a very regular basis.

If you allow your skin to get dry and cracked during the winter months, you can be more susceptible to getting sick from germs entering your body from these fissures. But by putting on lotions and other moisturizers throughout the day, you can protect your skin and keep yourself healthy.

Don’t Forget To Use Sunscreen

Although most people think of sunscreen as something they only need when they’re out in the summer sun, the winter sun can be just as harmful to your skin if you’re not careful.

To best protect your skin when you’ll be outside during the winter months, Jenna Igneri, a contributor to Nylon.com, recommends that you always apply a sunscreen that’s at least 40 to 50 SPF when you plan to spend any time outside. Especially if you live in an area where it’s snowy, you can get a lot of sunlight reflected back into your face, which can be very damaging to your skin.
