Hair Loss for Women: Why It Happens and What Can Be Done

Taking care of your hair is a reasonable thing to do, and it’s the dream of every woman to have healthy hair. When washing, combing, or doing daily hair practices, it is normal to lose a few hair strands. However, when you start losing a lot of hair, it becomes a concern that should be given close attention.

If you do not know when it is getting worse, look at the hairbrush, it would have a lot of hairs. Also, when you look in the mirror, you’ll notice changes on the head, and in some instances, you will see the scalp. You may not be able to figure out the reason for hair loss because there are different causes.

You may also not understand what to do to regain back the hair. It will be ideal to be observant so that you manage the loss as soon as possible. Here are the reasons for hair loss and what to do to get back to normal.

Genetics

Most people lose their hair due to hereditary conditions. It is natural and not a form of a disease. You may lose your hair due to aging, hormonal imbalances, and genetics. The hair gradually reduces in volume as the follicle shrinks, making the hair short, thin, and miniaturized.

The changes get noticeable in women during menopause, although they may start experiencing hair loss as early as 20 to 30 years. In the long run, the hair stops to grow permanently, forming a hair loss pattern on the scalp. When it begins to fall off, you’ll notice hair in the bathtub and the comb. The condition is called androgenic alopecia.

Childbirth

Naturally, women go through three phases of hair growth:

  • the growth stage when the hair begins to grow
  • the transitional period
  • the shedding phase

Most people discover that their hair goes to the growth stage during pregnancy. It is due to hormonal changes, and the growth lasts longer, although the hair does not shed off during this period.

After delivery, the estrogen goes back to normal, and the hair starts to grow normally. However, after a short period, it begins to shed off, which leads to either intense or mild shedding in some women. It happens months after delivery, and it is called telogen effluvium. You don’t have to worry about postpartum hair because it gets back to normal after a short while. You can use the recommended shampoos and conditioners to add volume to the hair.

Overprocessing Your Hair

Frequent and excessive chemicals and too much heat cause hair loss. Some products contain harsh chemicals that affect both your scalp and the hair. It can result in permanent hair loss or make it thinner due to damaged follicles. You can prevent further hair loss by stopping to use harsh chemicals.

Some products will help to hydrate the scalp and promote its healing. However, it may not be easy to get your hair back even after getting rid of the chemicals. You may need to seek guidance from a certified dermatologist who will take you through the recovery process. Changes During Birth Control

Birth control contraception causes hormonal imbalances to the human body, leading to hormone-induced shedding of the hair. Your body reacts to the contraceptives, increasing hair shedding, whether you just started, changing brands, or stopping it.

It is also a temporary phase, and the hair can get back to normal when you use products that add back the hair volume. You can also get your hair back by avoiding intensive shampoos and conditioners, as they may be too strong.

Exposing your Hair to Tight Hairstyles

Pulling your hair back can lead to hair loss. It happens when you tie braids, cornrows, dreadlocks, buns, or pull back hair too tight continually. It weakens the hairline, making it thinner, and if it happens frequently, it may lead to permanent hair loss. It is the most terrible hair loss experience that can damage the follicle beyond repair. This condition is called traction alopecia.

To prevent further loss, you will need to loosen up your hairstyle, avoid wearing one hairstyle for long, remove the style immediately you feel pain on the scalp, get a professional stylist, and avoid tight styles that pull on your hair.

Using Regular Heat to Style Your Hair

Hair gets weaker when you over-bleach, brush aggressively, or use hot tools frequently. Exposing it to harsh conditions weakens the hair shaft, which causes hair loss. This condition is called trichorrhexis nodosa. The hair does not necessarily break off from the root but along the shaft.

To stop further damage and get your hair back to normal, you will need to avoid using the hot tools or harsh chemicals and adapt to gentle brushing and healthy products.

Tips On How To Prevent Hair Loss

  • Wash your hair often
  • Make a routine for daily intake of proteins and essential carbohydrates, which provides the hair with energy to grow
  • Don’t use too much pressure when styling your hair
  • Try using leave-in conditioners, shampoos and detangles
  • When deep conditioning, use hair masks

Summary

It is normal to lose few hair strands, but if you notice too much hair loss, it may be an underlying issue that will need you to seek the help of a certified dermatologist who will get to the root cause. Taking longer to seek professional advice may lead to permanent loss of your hair.
