Common Signs of a Hoarder and How to Deal with It

Do you know that anyone can become a hoarder? It could be you or a close friend or even a family member. Is your place starting to look like a mess? Do you love to shop for things that you do not need or use? Are you having difficulty managing your clutter? If the answer to these questions is a “yes”, then there is a possibility that you may be going through an anxiety disorder called hoarding. Millions of people worldwide suffer from this condition, and it needs immediate attention. Before seeking professional help, here are some of the most common signs to identify if you suffer from an obsessive-compulsive condition known as hoarding.

Your inability to organize stuff at home

Do you love collecting different things just because you like to have them? Do you frequently stash all of your purchased items in any random place inside your home? According to mental health experts, potential hoarders lack necessary organizational skills. They also tend to forget about the things that they purchased, and where they placed them.

You love keeping stuff even if it is no longer important

People with a compulsive hoarding habit find themselves keeping things that do not have any value at all. Do you like collecting old paper bills, magazines, shopping bags, empty shoeboxes? What about your old clothes? Are you still using them, or do they remain in your closet despite being outdated? Are you keeping old things, thinking that you will find a purpose for them in the future?

How to deal with an obsessive-compulsive hoarding condition?

Seek help from a professional

If you feel that your hoarding habits are starting to get out of control, it is time to ask for help. A psychiatrist can help determine the root cause of your condition. They can provide support to manage your overwhelming emotions about buying. In extreme cases, your doctor can prescribe anti-anxiety medications to help you feel better.

Ask for help from people

If you accept the fact that something is wrong with you and your lifestyle, it is time to seek assistance. Call your friends over to help you declutter your entire space. Depending on the current status of your home, it can take you days or weeks to complete the process of decluttering. Carefully sort out all of your belongings in different boxes. Those that you can keep, the ones that are for donation and trash
